Prime TMS is excited to announce that we have received our first VA Choice Program referral through the Eastern Kansas VA Medical Network! We are very fortunate and grateful that he has allowed us to share his story:
“Hello, my name is Ryan and I am just beginning my journey with Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation here at Prime TMS. As I write this, I have only just completed my second treatment, so no real information at this point. In an effort to provide information to other Veterans and others that suffer from chronic depression, I have decided to write a daily journal documenting my experiences, successes and failures that come about over the next 6 to 9 weeks. In addition, I have asked Garrett to allow me to post in the BLOG section of the Prime TMS website, likely once or twice a week just to give anyone who wants to follow, some insight or just hear about a real person’s experience with Deep TMS.
Please allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I am 49 years old, I am a US Army Veteran as well as a Veteran of Law Enforcement and Emergency Services. I have been suffering with major depressive disorder now for well over 35 years. My first suicide attempt was at 13 years old, I deal constantly with suicidal ideations and thoughts that there is no reason for me to live. I have a constant feeling of worthlessness and I have no motivation to do even the most basic activities of life. I am also dual diagnosis, my addiction to alcohol has gotten much worse over the last 7 or 8 years. This year, I have lost my marriage, I have lost my family, I have lost a job. Essentially, I have lost everything, I feel like I have literally lost 35 years of my life to this disease.
I was initially diagnosed in 2007. I am currently at max dosage of two different antidepressant drugs and I attend therapy 1 to 2 times per week at the Department of Veteran Affairs Mental Health Clinic. The doctors, nurses and therapists at the VA have been very helpful, but trials with different medications or counseling methods have come up with little to no results. Sadly, I acted upon one of my ideations a couple of months ago and I am lucky to be alive today.
I discovered the concept of TMS while watching the news one day when a commercial for Prime TMS came on. I immediately began researching what TMS was all about. I read articles from patients and doctors alike. I read study after study that has been conducted and I felt this glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe this concept is real, especially since the studies were showing a 60 to 80 percent success rate, in some cases even higher. If you are even remotely considering Deep TMS, do the research yourself. Just simply Google “Deep TMS” and you will find the links to the blind studies, extensive information about the process itself as well as patient testimonials. After doing this research, I felt very comfortable in taking the next step.
So, I mentioned the VA earlier. I gathered my research and approached my therapist with the information. She referred me to a medical provider in the mental health clinic and I provided them with my research, my request as well as specific information that was provided to me by Garrett. I was so excited to learn that I would be the very first Veteran referred to Prime TMS from the Eastern Kansas VA Medical Network. I do now feel a glimmer of hope, although so much time has been lost, I cling to the hope that there is something left inside.
So here I am now, embarking upon this new journey, hoping that it will save my life. I can’t help but feel like this is my last hope (no pressure Garrett). So, hey everyone, this is me, all my faults and disasters. Join me in my journey if you’d like, if Garrett will allow me to use his BLOG as a platform. If you are interested in Deep TMS treatments, do a little research, talk with other patients and feel free to reach out to me, we’ll see how things go, my contact information will be available on the BLOG.”
